Tyler Germain is the head track and field coach at Kalamazoo Central High School in Kalamazoo, Michigan. Prior to taking over the head job for the Maroon Giants, he was an assistant on staff there. He also had coaching stints at Coopersville High School, Monticello (IL) High School, Benton Harbor High School, and Bay City Western High School. All told, Coach Germain has spent 21 seasons coaching track and field as everything from a volunteer, to an assistant, to a head coach, for both men and women. His main areas of expertise are in the sprints, sprint relays, and hurdle events, where he has coached numerous state finalists, medalists, and champions over the years. In his four seasons as the Maroon Giants’ head coach, his athletes have broken school records 23 times, turned in 13 all-state performances, and stormed to three individual state championships.
Most recently, his Kalamazoo Central men’s teams have finished in the top-ten at the MHSAA State Finals each of the last three years, and in 2024 celebrated its first state championship since 1965. His 4x100 team ran a season’s best time of 41.77, good enough for the ninth fastest time in the history of the state of Michigan. Following that season, he was named Boys Track Coach of the Year by both the the Michigan Interscholastic Track Coaches Association and the Michigan High School Coaches Association, as well as the NFHS Coaches Association Coach of the Year for Michigan and for the Midwest Region.
