Mike McCarthy is the Social Studies Department Chair and Head of Boys and Girls Track & Field and Cross Country at South Bend Saint Joseph High School in South Bend, Indiana. This spring will be his 20th year coaching track and field. Good health and good fortune—both benefits of distance running, as he sees it—have afforded him an existence teaching and coaching at his high school alma mater, which happens to be located only three-quarters of a mile south of his college alma mater. A student of both sprints/hurdles/jumps AND distance training, Mike has an insatiable appetite for learning and sees it as a personal mission to provide the best product in his classroom and practice venue every day of the year.
