John Makell III, also known on YouTube as “Youth Speed Coach,” is a former three-time collegiate All-Conference sprinter who is presently a middle school and high school physical educator and track coach in Lexington, South Carolina. Coach Makell is available to conduct speed clinics for youth groups, high schools, and colleges. His most notable athlete, high jumper Tanya Hughes, who he started in track and field in middle school and helped coach through high school, was a three-time high school All-American and went on to be a four-time NCAA Champion, NCAA record holder, Olympic Trials champion, and Olympic finalist.
Makell writes on a variety of topics. Although his specialty is speed training, on his Studentathlete.net website, he has numerous posts on youth sports and youth fitness development, as well as topics such as academics and the young student-athlete, parents and college recruiting, ACL injury prevention, and more.
